President Maithripala Sirisena says that it has been decided to bring down elephants from Myanmar to protect the perahera culture.

The President made the announcement while participating at a discussion held at the President’s secretariat yesterday on protecting the perahera culture in the face of the crisis situation that has cropped up with regard to the scarcity of tamed elephants.

However, attention has been drawn to the possibility of using elephants currently kept in the Wildlife Department’s custody as an immediate solution, under legal procedures on court orders.

Sustainable Development and Wildlife Minister Gamini Jayawikrama Perera, Kandy Sacred Tooth Relic Temple Diyawadana Nilamey Nilanga Daeaela and the Satara Mahaa Devaala Basnaayake Nilameys participated in the discussion held yesterday.
