The Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva says that an official application has been made to regain GSP Plus.
Dr. Silva who is currently on a tour of Europe said the application was made last Wednesday.
At the same time, Sri Lanka has taken the stance that the United Kingdom should remain with the European Union as such a position would be favourable for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka exports 40% of its goods to Great Britain.
Dr. Harsha de Silva has therefore requested all British citizens with Sri Lankan origin vote for the unity of EU in the upcoming referendum this month.
Minister Harin Fernando and Deputy Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office Rosy Senanayake are accompanying the deputy minister on his tour of Europe.
Dr. Harsha de Silva further said that Sri Lanka could lose GSP Plus concession if the UK withdraws from the EU.
The Sri Lanka will then have to enter a separate trade agreement with the United Kingdom and such a process would take an extensive period of time.
