The Government Information Department says that 52 individuals were arrested by the police for unruly behavior during the inauguration ceremony of the Hambanthota – Mirijjawila Sri Lanka – China Industrial Zone.

Hambanthota magistrate ordered 21 individuals who were produced before courts, to be remanded until tomorrow, while two others have been remanded until the 11th of January.

The Project was launched last morning under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe.

A tense situation erupted in the vicinity of the premises when a group of MPs from the Joint Opposition along with several residents from the area engaged in a protest.

The protestors arrived close to the premises despite security measures taken by security units.

With the tense situation further intensifying, Police had fired tear gas and water cannon at the protestors.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara too arrived at the scene.

23 persons including 11 Police Officers were injured during the clash and they are receiving treatment at the Hambantota hospital.
