The Appeals Court today decided that medical degree holders of South Asian Institute of Technology and MEdicine (SAITAM) - Malabe could register with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Update:

The verdict was issued by President of the Court of Appeal Vijith Malalgoda and Appeal Court Judge S. Thuray-raja.

The petition was filed by a female student from Malabe Private Medical School.

The Health Minister, Ministry Secretary and the Sri Lanka Medical Council had been named as respondents.

The Court of Appeal rejected the initial objections filed by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Later, President of the Appeal Court Vijith Malalgoda said that the degree offered by the Malabe Private medical School is legal as the institution has been registered with the University Grants Commission.

Meanwhile, an urgent meeting has been convened by the GMOA to discuss future action that needs to be taken.

GMOA General Secretary Dr. Naveen Soyza who met journalists outside the court room after the Court proceedings said that the meeting will be held next Thursday.
