The Sri Lanka Navy stated that the fire that erupted in the cargo Vessel Daniela has been fully controlled.

The container vessel was sailing under the Panama flag near Sri Lankan maritime waters when it caught fire.

Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walaa-kuluge stated that the fire had spread due to inflammable substance being loaded among the cargo containers.

The vessel is currently anchored at sea, 10 nautical miles off the Colombo Port.

The Egypt bound container Vessel, Daniela, caught fire last morning while it was transporting 14 thousand containers of cargo.

It was sailing 120 nautical miles away from the southern part of Colombo at the time of the incident.

Navy went into action soon after the information was received about the incident while 2 fast attack craft were sent to the scene immediately and three tug boats were deployed for the operation later.

In addition, 3 Indian Coast guard ships which were in Colombo on a cordial mission also joined the Navy in the operation to douse the fire.

Later, Sri Lanka Air force sent a BELL 2-1-2 helicopter to assist the fire fighters.
