Minister of Wildlife and Sustainable Development Gamini Jayawickrema Perera says that a census of wild elephants will be carried out next year.

The Minister said that the census will be carried out island-wide in order to obtain accurate figure of the country’s wild elephant population.

The Minister said certain people say that there are around 5000-8000 wild elephants in Sri Lanka. "But the figure cannot be trusted", he added.
