The distribution of fuel has been interrupted due to a strike launched by petroleum corporation trade unions.

Our correspondents stated that long queues are building up in front of filling stations since last night.

Petroleum workers have launched this strike demanding the arrest of former petroleum minister Arjuna Ranatunga following the shooting which killed a worker at the headquarters of the corporation yesterday.

Corporation workers protested when former minister Ranatunga accompanied by his security guards arrived at his office in Dematagoda yesterday.

They claimed that the former minister’s attempt to enter his office was illegal.

During the tense situation, 3 protesters were injured when the security of the former minister opened fire.

Later a 34-year old worker from Kurunegala died of his injuries.

A hospital spokesman stated that another injured worker is still receiving treatment in the ICU.

The security guard who opened fire was arrested and, police put the former minister in camouflage and evacuated him from the building.

The investigations have been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division.

However, the strikers threatened to continue the strike until former minister Ranatunga is arrested.
