Two Chinese nationals, suspected of smuggling several insects species from the Hortan plains national park, noted as being as a world heritage site , have been arrested on suspicion.

Police noted that the two suspects had 10 species of beetles in their possession.

The raid was conducted following a tip off received by the park ranger of Hortan plains national park.

The suspects are to be produced before Nuwara Eliya Magistrates court .

Meanwhile, a historic fine of 10.84 million rupees was imposed on 5 foreign nationals recently for the attempted smuggling of fauna and flora from another  world heritage site, Sinharaja forest.

This was the highest fine imposed for an offense relating to wild life, under the protection of fauna and flora ordinance which has been active since 1937.
