The Speaker appointed a special committee to probe yesterday's incident in Parliament and submit a report immediately.

Deputy Speaker’s office stated that the report will be handed over to the speaker at 12 noon today.

A tense situation erupted in parliament last afternoon when a debate concerning the removal of former President’s army security detail got out of hand and led to a brawl.

As a result of the clash Speaker Karu Jayasuriya felt it was necessary to adjourn the session in parliament until today.

When Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardana questioned about the removal of army security detail, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe intervened to respond to the MP.

Field Marshal Minister Sarath Fonseka followed suit.

At that juncture, Joint Opposition MPs walked to centre of the house and started protesting against Minister Sarath Fonseka’s speech.

UNP MP Sandith Samarasinghe was hospitalized after the clash.

At that point, 1:35pm , the house was adjourned but recommenced at 3.03pm.

Opening the session, the speaker informed parliament that several MPs had been injured during the clash, therefore it was inappropriate to continue with the sessions.
