Sri Lanka to launch digital identity project after decade-long delay

Sri Lanka is preparing to issue its inaugural national digital identity this year, with nationwide rollout scheduled for completion by August 2027, unlocking a strategic digitalization initiative that stalled for over ten years.Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranda Weliange confirmed during a media briefing in Colombo announcing SLT Mobitel financial results for the first half of 2026 that the delayed project entered its active implementation phase. Authorities established the digital identity framework, aiming to issue the first credentials this year and achieve full implementation by August next year.Officials held discussions and placed the project on hold since 2012 before unlocking it for current execution. The digital identity framework operates alongside the national data exchange, which integrates scattered state sector databases to eliminate institutional silos. Furthermore, the government develops the 'Supiri App' as a unified single-window portal allowing citizens to access public services seamlessly.Establishing a secure digital identity system serves as a vital component in transitioning the nation from a cash-heavy society toward a cashless digital payments ecosystem while accelerating sectoral digitalization across smart education, healthcare, agriculture, transport, and tourism. To support nationwide digital adoption, authorities work to expand geographic network coverage from 94 percent to 98 percent over a two-to-three-year fast-track development period. This expansion requires installing 600 to 800 new telecommunication towers alongside ongoing school fiberisation initiatives to ensure a minimum speed of two megabits per second across all provinces.

Ministry of Environment pays tribute to Dr Nanda Malini with orchid memory

The Ministry of Environment published a social media post commemorating the hybrid orchid named "Ascocenda Nanda Malani", which the Orchid Circle presented in 2004 at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo to honor Dr Visharada Nanda Malini, the towering pillar of Sri Lankan devotional song artistry who awakened an entire nation for over six decades with a deep, robust, and melodious voice. The post highlights that her name blends into the beauty of nature, noting that the orchid designated by the Sri Lanka Orchid Circle serves as a symbol immortalizing her name in the lap of Mother Nature. The ministry release states that while a singing voice may fall silent, the conscience ignited by that voice can never be silenced, and just as a flower fades and falls to the ground, the fragrance it adds to nature never fades. The song anthology of Dr Nanda Malini, who cultivated the artistic field by performing immense artistic service, will remain an immortal fragrance from generation to generation in the nation. The Ministry of Environment further expresses that even though she departed from us, her singing voice will continue to echo forever in the hearts of the nation, and her name will blossom eternally amidst the embrace of nature.

Ronaldinho chases 300th goal at 46

Brazil great Ronaldinho said he hopes he can score his 300th career goal after announcing a comeback at the age of 46 at Italian third-tier side Ravenna.Thousands of fans gathered at a city beach for an event dubbed "Ronaldinho Day", enduring rain to witness the unveiling of the former Paris St-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan playmaker, who retired from playing in 2015."I'm very happy to be here with friends, we have a team that can do something good," said Ronaldinho, who will become a shareholder in the Serie C side."Will you see me play? I don't know, only the coach knows that. Coming back to Italy is wonderful, I'm here to help my teammates win."As you can see, I'm in shape, I feel good... If I could score my 300th goal, that would be even more beautiful."Ronaldinho ended his career in September 2015 when he played his last official match with Brazilian club Fluminense. He won the World Cup in 2002, scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final against England, and the Ballon d'Or in 2005.The forward's comeback was first announced in June by Ignazio Cipriani, an Italian-American businessman and owner of the club since 2024, while he was attending the World Cup in Miami."His objective is romantic, to try to score his last goal," said Cipriani on Thursday."His involvement is not a token gesture or a marketing stunt to get people talking about us."Cipriani added that Ronaldinho would not play against Reggiana on Monday in the Serie C season opener.Ravenna finished third in Group B of last season's third-tier championship and are seeking a return to Serie B, where they haven't played since 2008.-BBC

No feeling of vindication for Lawson on Red Bull return

No feeling of vindication for Lawson on Red Bull return

Some drivers might feel vindicated after being promoted back to a team that dumped them after two races last year, but Liam Lawson said he was just focused on getting the best out of the Red ‌Bull car at this week's Dutch Grand Prix. The New Zealander was dropped to Racing Bulls after the first two rounds of last season but recalled to Red Bull for this weekend after Isack Hadjar injured his wrist in training.Lawson said his demotion felt "a long time ago" and he took no particular pleasure at being asked to help out the senior team for the weekend."I haven't really looked at it like that. For me we've had a really good year so far, and obviously I'm grateful to have been chosen for something like this," the 24-year-old told reporters at Zandvoort on Thursday."But I'm really focused on trying to get something out of the weekend. It would be great to do that and have a good weekend, but I'm sure it's going to be challenging."After the switch to Racing Bulls, Lawson outperformed his replacement at Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda, ‌and this year he is ninth in the drivers' standings after scoring points in eight of the 11 rounds so far.Lawson discovered he would be driving for Red Bull this weekend on the runway as he returned from his holiday during the season break and said changing cars would be tough."The week quickly changed from what it was going to be to Red Bull prep. It's going to be challenging – there are obviously differences between the cars," he added."As long as for me I've done all the preparation I can ... I'm going to try and enjoy it as well."It's a track I've enjoyed racing at in the past ... I'm going to try and enjoy the weekend, but there are definitely going to be challenges that we face."The Dutch Grand Prix, which will not be on the calendar from next season, features a sprint race before qualifying on Saturday.-Reuters

England five-for duo cut ball in half

England five-for duo cut ball in half

Much like it is a tradition for a footballer to take away the match ball after scoring a hat-trick, a bowler will pocket the cricket ball after claiming a five-wicket haul. But what happens if two bowlers take five-wicket hauls in the same innings?England seamers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue came up with a solution after they snared five apiece on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan."Robbo said we can split the ball in half," Tongue told Test Match Special. "The groundstaff have kindly done that."It's the first time I've seen that happen. I'm sure I'll be putting that up somewhere."Robinson showed off his half in a media conference and explained: "We were walking off the field."Josh said it and I said: 'We actually should do that, it would be quite cool.'"You don't really have too many halves of a cricket ball, so it would be something that we never forget."The efforts of the pace-bowling duo helped Joe Root get off to an ideal start on the first day of his second stint as England Test captain.Tongue claimed 5-46 and Robinson 5-51 to skittle Pakistan for 171 after England won the toss. The home side moved to 112-2 by the close in Leeds.Tongue and Robinson are the first pair of England bowlers to register five-wicket hauls in the same Test innings since Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2006.They led England off the field at Headingley hand in hand, hatching their plan to make one ball into two halves."Wayne Bentley, the team manager, took it down to the groundstaff," said Robinson."I said: 'Do you reckon they will be able to do it?' Within five minutes he brought it back up and it was done. It's really nice."For Robinson, the success in the first Test comes just days after he and wife Mia welcomed their first child together. Baby Eva was born in the early hours of last Thursday."I've been catching up on my sleep since I got to the hotel in Leeds," said Robinson, who has another child from a previous relationship."It's a really special week having another baby. It almost makes today even sweeter, when you leave them after the birth and you put a performance in. It meant a lot today to do that."I know they're not here, but I was thinking of them the whole time."Robinson's spell, his fifth five-for in Test cricket, continued a successful return to the England team since he was recalled at the beginning of the summer. The 32-year-old played his first Test in more than two years against New Zealand at Lord's following a period left out of the England team because of concerns about his fitness.Robinson marked his recall with seven wickets in the match against the Black Caps, including a five-wicket haul.He now has 88 Test wickets at an average of 21.25. No England seamer since 1914 has taken as many wickets at a better average."I probably learned a lot about myself when I was out of the team," said Robinson."At the moment I probably feel as good as I've ever felt. I'm probably not in as a good rhythm - I know that sounds silly after wickets - but I'm probably not in as good a rhythm as I would like."As long as I can stay on the park and stay fit, hopefully I can get that rhythm and stay good."-BBC

NCE to lead exporters’ delegation to India to unlock new market opportunities

NCE to lead exporters’ delegation to India to unlock new market opportunities

The National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) is inviting exporters, manufacturers, aspiring exporters and businesses seeking new market opportunities to join an exporters’ delegation to New Delhi and Mumbai from September 24 to October 1, 2026.India remains one of Sri Lanka’s most important trading partners and offers significant potential for expanding exports. Sri Lankan exports to India increased 17.2% to approximately US$1.04 billion in 2025, from US$881.6 million in 2024. The growth has continued in 2026, with exports rising 36.16% to US$688.47 million during the first six months. With a population of more than 1.4 billion and a rapidly expanding consumer and business economy, India offers opportunities across sectors including tea, rubber and rubber-based products, coconut products, spices, apparel and textiles, food and beverages, gems and jewellery, electrical and electronic products, ICT and BPM services, logistics, manufacturing and other value-added products and services.Opportunities also extend beyond traditional exports to joint ventures, investment, contract manufacturing, distribution partnerships, technology collaboration and integration into Indian and regional supply chains.Sri Lankan exporters also benefit from the India–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA), which has provided preferential market access since 2000. In 2025, approximately US$634 million, or 61.3% of Sri Lanka’s exports to India, were made under the ISFTA framework.Against the backdrop of ongoing discussions between the two governments to strengthen bilateral economic and trade relations, the NCE believes this is an opportune time for Sri Lankan businesses to explore the Indian market directly.A key feature of the delegation is its engagement with leading Indian chambers and business organisations. In New Delhi, delegates will meet representatives of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).In Mumbai, the programme will include engagements with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA), All India Association of Industries (AIAI) and International Chamber of Investment and Business (ICIB).These organisations will facilitate B2B meetings, providing Sri Lankan companies with opportunities to meet potential buyers, importers, distributors, investors and other business partners. The delegation is also supported by the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi and the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, with trade officers assisting with the programme and engagement with the Indian business community. For SMEs and emerging exporters, accessing India’s large and diverse market can be challenging without the right contacts and market knowledge. The NCE delegation aims to provide a structured platform to overcome these barriers.Participants will be able to assess market demand, meet potential partners, explore export and distribution opportunities, identify joint-venture and investment prospects, and gain first-hand market insights. The NCE is encouraging established exporters, manufacturers, SMEs, aspiring exporters and businesses seeking partnerships to join the delegation and explore tangible commercial opportunities in India.

Tesla, automakers launch record recall in China

Tesla, automakers launch record recall in China

Tesla and eight other automakers said on Friday they will recall a total of about 4.3 million vehicles in China over concerns that doors may be difficult to open in an emergency, marking ‌the country's largest automotive recall. The recall remedies range from software updates to warning labels and improved markings around door handles.Beijing has this year increased oversight of the EV industry and introduced tougher safety requirements, as automakers, locked in a fierce price war, roll out technologies in the world's largest vehicle market.China has also said it will ban concealed door handles from 2027, making it the first country to phase out a design popularised by Tesla and widely adopted by domestic Chinese EV makers.Tesla did not immediately reply to a request for comment, while Geely and Xpeng declined to comment. Xiaomi said it does not have additional information beyond the regulatory notice.Leapmotor said it was committed to safety. It said the upgrade involved only a warning label and upgrading the power-window control software, but that it was "managing and filing it in accordance with the recall process out of a sense of responsibility to our users".Most of the actions, classified as product recalls under Chinese regulations, target emergency mechanical door-release handles that regulators say may be hard to locate or operate in a crash — a defect that has drawn scrutiny after several cases of passengers trapped inside burning vehicles.Chinese state media reported in October that the driver of a Xiaomi SU7 sedan died after a crash and fire because passersby could not open the doors to pull him out.WARNING LABELS AND SOFTWARE FIXESThe scale of the recall reflects both the size of China's auto fleet and regulators' increasingly aggressive scrutiny of safety defects as vehicles become more software-driven.The automakers, including Tesla and Xiaomi, will install warning labels free ‌of charge to identify the handles, while most will also deploy over-the-air, or remote, software updates.Tesla's recall is the largest, reflecting how many vehicles it has sold with this type of handle. It concerns 2.98 million imported and China-made Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles to be recalled from September 25, the company told the State Administration for Market Regulation, according to the regulator's statement. The U.S. automaker said mechanical emergency door-release handles may be difficult to identify following a severe collision and electrical system failure, potentially hindering occupants' escape or rescuers' access, according to the statement.Tesla's remedy includes warning labels and an update delivered remotely that automatically lowers vehicle windows after a collision.Apart from Tesla and Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng and Geely Holding also announced their largest recalls on record, according to their filings to SAMR.Xiaomi will recall about 390,000 vehicles, Leapmotor about 371,000 and Xpeng about 264,000.The other companies that filed with the regulator are undertaking much smaller recalls. The cost of the actions may be limited, Sam Fiorani, vice president of research firm AutoForecast Solutions, said."Modern over-the-air updates reduce the costs and downtime associated with major recalls and even the physical work needed to be done will not be very costly compared to significant recalls of the past," he said. The door handles — which open via a key fob, smartphone or touch-sensitive panel — have also drawn scrutiny from U.S. regulators.Last month, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would consider new safety standards to address the risk of occupant entrapment in vehicles during electrical power failures.-Reuters

Fresh Sri Lankan pineapples reach Pakistani market for the first time

Fresh Sri Lankan pineapples reach Pakistani market for the first time

C R Exports (Pvt) Ltd successfully shipped the inaugural 20-foot container of fresh Sri Lankan pineapples to Pakistan on August 21, marking a historic milestone in the island's fresh fruit exports.Intervention and close coordination involving the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, the Sri Lanka High Commission in Pakistan, the Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka, the Department of Commerce, and technical support from the Department of Agriculture and the National Plant Quarantine Service proved instrumental in achieving this milestone. Prolonged technical discussions and close cooperation between the national plant protection organizations of both nations established necessary phytosanitary arrangements.Pakistan represents a high-potential market due to a population of approximately 252 million, importing 2,000 to 5,000 metric tonnes of pineapples annually with an import value near 10 million United States dollars. Although Thailand and the Philippines remain major suppliers, Sri Lanka expects to gain greater market share driven by distinctive taste, superior quality, freshness, and geographical proximity.Mohammad Aqeed, an entomologist from the National Plant Protection Organization of Pakistan, visited Sri Lanka to inspect and audit selected pineapple orchards and pack houses. Pakistani authorities subsequently granted approval for importation subject to the issuance of a phytosanitary certificate by the National Plant Quarantine Service of Sri Lanka. All exported fresh pineapples originate from Good Agricultural Practices-certified fields with producers and exporters registered under the Department of Agriculture.Export revenue from pineapple products reached approximately two million United States dollars in 2025. Identifying and developing new markets like Pakistan remains vital to expanding agricultural exports and achieving national export targets for 2030, while future efforts explore introducing avocados and oranges to the Pakistani market. This new trade opportunity maximizes benefits from the Pakistan–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement and strengthens bilateral economic relations.

India orders Firebase accounts takedown in scam crackdown

India orders Firebase accounts takedown in scam crackdown

India has directed Google to shut down hundreds of accounts on its Firebase web development platform after finding a pattern of criminals misusing the service to impersonate major banks and defraud people, according to government notices and a source familiar with the matter.Online scams have become one of ‌India's most pressing law enforcement challenges, with Indians losing nearly $2.4 billion in alleged cyber fraud in 2025, according to government data. For years, the government has gone after scammers by ordering their websites removed.Of late, however, Indian officials have noticed a "pattern" that scammers are using the Google's app and website development tool Firebase, which has millions of users the world over, according to the source with direct knowledge of the matter. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has directed at least 57 websites and databases that were hosted on Firebase be taken down in August alone, saying they were being used to distribute malware and steal sensitive financial information from victims' phones, according to three notices sent to Google and reviewed by Reuters. There was no suggestion in the notices that Google or Firebase were in any way responsible. However, Google can be held liable for the named links if they are not taken down within three hours of the notice being issued."Android-based malware programs are masquerading as legitimate banking services, specifically targeting Android users with credit cards. Scammers lure victims by promoting offers such as new credit cards, reward redemptions, or credit limit upgrades," I4C said in an August 17 notice to Google, directing the removals. The source added the total number of notices sent to Google over Firebase ran into dozens in recent months, without sharing an exact number.Alphabet-owned Google said in a statement the company has "strict policies prohibiting the use of our services for phishing, malware, or financial fraud" and works with law enforcement, including I4C, to evaluate and act on notices.Representatives for India's home (interior) ministry, which controls the I4C, did not respond to questions.BOOMING DIGITAL USEFirebase is used by millions of developers worldwide to build apps and host websites. It is part of Google's cloud business, which generated nearly $25 billion in revenue in the most recent quarter.Scam operators have ‌been migrating to Firebase from other free tools since last year, drawn by generous free options and more capable database features, the Indian government has assessed, the source said.Scammers are increasingly targeting India's booming digital payments ecosystem. Nearly 242 billion digital transactions were processed through India's real-time payments system alone in the year to March 2026, making it one of the world's largest digital payments markets.Reuters reviewed three government notices sent by I4C to Google in August, accessed through Lumen, a non-profit database where companies like Google voluntarily submit content removal requests they receive."ANDROID GOD MODE"Seven of the 57 websites and databases asked to be removed were phishing pages created using Firebase that mimicked top Indian banks, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. The remaining were what the government agency said were websites created to collect data stolen from victims' phones, including credit card details and one-time passwords. The three banks did not respond to queries from Reuters. The fraud described in the notices worked by getting victims to install apps that looked like legitimate banking services. One scheme exploited by scammers was PM-KISAN, a federal government programme that pays small farmers roughly 2,000 Indian rupees (about $21) every four months, according to a fourth notice and the source with direct knowledge.Websites allegedly promised recipients help in claiming their payment, asking them to download an app to redeem the money. Then, the app sends the user's data to the scammer's Firebase database, effectively leading to a hack of the phone where scammers can access other downloaded apps and defraud customers of their funds. The government issued one public advisory in March, without naming Firebase, but raising concerns about such malware, widely called "Android God Mode" by cybersecurity researchers, a term describing the near-total control over victims' phones."These malicious apps often impersonate trusted services such as banking, government and utility platforms, and trick users into installing them through links," the advisory said.-Reuters

Aitken Spence Travels restore flood damaged school library in Gampola

Aitken Spence Travels restore flood damaged school library in Gampola

Education has always been at the heart of Gangasiripura Kanishta Vidyalaya in Gampola, which was established in the 1930s. The school has shaped generations of young minds and today it provides education to more than 1,400 students, across 38 classes, from Grades 1 to 11.However, when Cyclone Ditwah swept through the central region of Sri Lanka, the school was left grappling with extensive damage in its aftermath. Among the hardest hit facilities was the school library, where floodwaters destroyed all the books, furniture, electrical fittings, and learning resources, depriving the students of a treasured space that had stimulated curiosity and creative development, fostering a love for reading.Recognising the importance of restoring access to quality learning environments, Aitken Spence Travels, through its sustainability platform 'Pure Path’ and the Nurturing Lilies programme, undertook the complete refurbishment of the school library. The restoration included repairing the flood damaged structures, replacing electrical wiring, installing lighting and ceiling fans, repainting the interior, and restocking the library with a collection of new books and educational materials.Adding a personal touch to the initiative, employees of Aitken Spence Travels contributed books from their own collections, reflecting the company's culture of giving and sharing to the development of young learners. The fully restored library was officially handed over to the school during a special ceremony attended by Nalin Jayasundera, Managing Director of Aitken Spence Travels, together with members of the company's sustainability team, the school Principal, teachers, students and representatives of the local community. The occasion celebrated not only the successful completion of the project but also the reopening of a vital learning hub that will continue to inspire and support future generations.Principal of Gangasiripura Kanishta Vidyalaya R. M. M. Wasantha Kumara expressed his gratitude for the initiative, stating, "the restoration of our school library is about so much more than rebuilding a physical space, it is about restoring hope, opportunity and a love for learning among our students. Our children lost one of their most treasured learning resources.”” Today, thanks to the generosity of Aitken Spence Travels, our students once again have a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment where they can read, learn and broaden their knowledge.”“This investment will leave a lasting legacy for generations of children and will stand as a shining example of how the private sector can play a meaningful role in uplifting communities, creating opportunities for schools such as ours"Jayasundera stated "Education is one of the most powerful investments we can make in the future, and a library is every child’s dedicated environment that inspires learning, curiosity and growth."

Dave Bautista officially set as Kratos in ‘God of War’ TV series

Dave Bautista is officially taking up the mantle of the “God of War.” Variety has learned that the actor is now set to lead the Amazon Prime Video TV series based on the video game franchise in the role of Kratos. It was originally reported earlier this month that Bautista was in talks to play the role after Ryan Hurst, who was announced as Kratos in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep onset that required surgery and would have delayed restarting production into 2027. It was announced shortly thereafter that Amazon and Sony, which is co-producing, were recasting the part.Prime Video has given the “God of War” show a two-season order, with the two seasons set to shoot back-to-back. Filming originally began in Vancouver back in February. With Bautista now locked in as Kratos, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. All scenes featuring Hurst will now have to be reshot. As Variety previously reported, there are few better suited for the role of Kratos than Bautista. Aside from the fact he is an accomplished actor, he is one of few in Hollywood who could step into the role on short notice in the physical shape it requires. Kratos is known for his incredibly muscular physique in the games, and Bautista has been in remarkable shape throughout his career. Thus, he does not need months of prep time to prepare for the role.He is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. The series will pick up with the story of the two most recent “God of War” games, in which Kratos must raise his ten-year old son Atreus while battling gods of the Norse pantheon. Per the logline, “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”Callum Vinson remains attached to play Kratos’ son Atreus. Additional cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.Ronald D. Angélique Kidjo makes history for Africa with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Five-time Grammy award winner Angélique Kidjo has made history as the first African musician to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame."We Africans just don't know what we've given to the world, and what we continue giving to the world for the music to exist. Without us, there's no music possible on this planet," the musical icon, who comes from Benin, said at the ceremony. She was joined by her family, friends and stars such as Hollywood actors Willem Dafoe and Djimon Hounsou, who is also from Benin, and Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold. For more than four decades, Kidjo, 66, has taken African sounds to global audiences, blending influences from her native Benin with funk, jazz and pop.Celebrating her illustrious career, Kidjo thanked others as her legacy was immortalised in Los Angeles."The star for me means that my vision of the world as a small village is a reality," she said as it was unveiled on Tuesday."It doesn't matter where we come from, what language we speak, which skin colour we have. We are human. It's one human family."Kidjo grew up in Benin, but left for Paris in 1983, citing oppression from the country's then-communist government."From the moment the communist regime arrived in Benin, I became aware that the freedom we enjoy can be snatched away in a second," she told the BBC in 2023.The Walk of Fame ceremony was also filled with singing and dancing in celebration of Kidjo's career, which has included collaborations with big names such as Burna Boy, John Legend, Bono and Alicia Keys. Her latest album, HOPE!!, was released earlier this year with tracks produced by Pharrell Williams, and collaborations with Ayra Starr, Quavo, Nile Rogers and Diane Warren. She has released 18 albums in total and has been nominated for 17 Grammy awards, which she has won five times. The songstress also won the 2023 Polar Music Prize, and two years earlier was named as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People."She is without a doubt the hardest working woman in showbusiness," Dafoe said at the ceremony."The first time I saw Angélique perform live, I thought her music, her dancing, her commitment were incredible."The Spider-Man star likened her energy to that of soul singer James Brown, who he called the "hardest working man in showbusiness"."She's not only an incredible performer - she doesn't pop on the mic like I do - songwriter and musician, but also an incredibly kind and giving person and a real deal activist."Kidjo is a Unicef and Oxfam goodwill ambassador, and is the co-founder of the Batonga Foundation, which helps vulnerable young girls and women in Benin. At the Los Angeles gathering she was also praised by Harvey Mason Jr, the CEO of Recording Academy - the organisation that also oversees the Grammy awards."She's connected cultures, she's crossed borders, she's reminded audiences everywhere that while we may come from different backgrounds, her music unites in a way that few other things can," he said.Kidjo joins Charlize Theron, a white South African actress, in representing Africa on the Walk of Fame, which comprises more than 2,800 stars.-BBC
