A new Mayor has been elected to the Matale Municipal Council.
That was during a secret ballot held today to elect the mayor.
Accordingly, Palitha Jayasekara, the mayoral candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has obtained 9 votes and Sandanam Prakash of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who obtained 10 votes has been elected as the Mayor of Matale.
It was vacant due to the removal of former Mayor Daljith Aluvihare by the Governor of the Central Province.
There are 21 people's representatives in the Matale Municipal Council and two UNP representatives were not present in today's election.
