'No salt shortage in the country'

Lanka Salt Limited in Hambantota Chairman, Attorney-at-Law, Nishantha Sandabarana reiterated that there will never be a salt shortage in the country.

He added that the chemicals that were added to the seawater with the fire erupted on the MV X-Press Pearl, will not affect the production of salt in the country.

However, reportedly, consumers have purchased more salt with the rumour that was circulating noting that fire on the distressed vessel would affect the salt production in the country.

Hiru Correspondent stated that consumers had visited the shops in Aluthgama, Beruwala, and several other areas which were given licence to open during travel restricted period, just to purchase salt.

The Lanka Salt Limited Chairperson further added that there should not be feared unnecessary over a shortage of salt.

Meanwhile, speaking at the media briefing, Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Udaya Gammanpila stated that there is no salt shortage in the country.

He added that the salt pans (lewaya) in the country are not affected by the chemicals that were released by the distressed vessel.
