Former Sri Lanka cricketer Sachithra Senanayake, who faces allegations of match fixing, was given an overseas travel ban by the Colombo Magistrate's Court.

This was after the Attorney General’s Department instructed the Special Investigations Unit of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to file criminal charges against former Sri Lankan cricket Sachithra Senanayake, for match-fixing.

It is reported that the Attorney General’s Department has directed to press criminal charges against former Sri Lanka cricketer Sachithra Senanayake since “sufficient materials have been disclosed in terms of the Prevention of Offences related to Sports Act No. 24 of 2019”.

This is an Act to provide for the prevention of match fixing, corruption, illegal manipulation and illegal betting in sports and for the appointment of a Special Investigations Unit for investigation of offences and to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The 38-year-old Sachithra Senanayake was a former T20 World Cup-winning team member, he bowled his 4 over for 22 runs without taking a wicket was not required to bat.

Sachithra Senanayake had allegedly approached two cricketers participating in the first edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020 via phone calls from Dubai, instigating them to ‘fix’ matches during the tournament, a criminal offence in Sri Lanka.

The Lanka Premier League was held from November 27 to December 17, 2020 in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.

In 2020, a media report had alleged that the 38-year-old had contacted two cricketers participating in the first edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020 instigating them into corrupt practices in the inaugural LPL tournament, through phone calls made from Dubai.

Alex Marshall, general manager of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), reportedly held several rounds of talks with local cricket officials and representatives of the Attorney General's Department earlier this week.

The former Sri Lanka off-spinner however had refuted the allegations while claiming that they were attempts to defame and slander him. He vehemently denied any connection to him over the allegations.

Corruption in sports was made a punishable offence by the enactment of the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act in 2019. His will be the first case that goes to trial since the enactment of the law.

If proven guilty, Senanayake on conviction will be liable to a fine not exceeding Sri Lanka Rupees 100 Million or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years, or both fine and imprisonment.

The 38-year-old had taken 78 international wickets in 73 white-ball matches for Sri Lanka. He was wicketless in his only Test played against Pakistan in 2013/2014.
