The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka has sought to calm public fears regarding the Nipah virus, which has garnered attention due to recent outbreaks in India. The virus, first identified in Malaysia in 1999, has prompted concerns about its potential spread.

In response, the Ministry of Health conducted a press conference to address certain reports circulating in the midst of this situation. Officials emphasized that there is no need for panic among the country's citizens.

To prepare for any potential risk, the Ministry of Health has taken proactive measures by ordering special test kits recommended by the World Health Organization for detecting the Nipah virus. These kits are anticipated to arrive in Sri Lanka within a few days.

It is important to note that, globally, there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available for patients infected with the Nipah virus.

In related news, healthcare unions have declared a national protest day to highlight several pressing issues within the healthcare system. The protests, which are set to occur simultaneously in front of 70 government hospitals from 11:30 am to 1 pm, involve the participation of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and healthcare assistants. The protests aim to draw attention to problems such as the shortage of human resources in the healthcare sector and the inadequate supply of essential medicines.
