England all-rounder Ben Stokes, a key player for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made the decision to sit out of the IPL 2024 season to focus on managing his workload and ensuring his fitness. The franchise has expressed support for Stokes's decision, emphasizing their understanding of the importance of player well-being.

Stokes, is expected to undergo a knee surgery after the World Cup, and the timeline for his return will be determined in collaboration with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The decision not to participate in the IPL 2024 is part of Stokes's commitment to a comprehensive rehabilitation process for his long-standing knee injury.

The Chennai Super Kings, in a statement on their website, acknowledged Stokes's decision and conveyed their support. However, the franchise has not confirmed whether they will release Stokes or retain him for the upcoming season. The IPL has set a deadline for franchises to announce retentions and releases on Sunday, November 26, 2023.

Stokes, who became the most expensive purchase for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 IPL auction at INR 16.25 crore, had a limited impact in the previous season due to his injury. Despite playing just two games, Stokes showcased his batting prowess, scoring 304 runs in the recent T20 World Cup.

The franchise will have the option to retain Stokes if they choose not to release him by the specified deadline. Alternatively, if released, Stokes will enter the auction pool, presenting an opportunity for the Chennai Super Kings to utilize the budget allocated for him in the upcoming IPL auction.

Stokes, the England Test captain, is optimistic about featuring in the upcoming Test series against India, scheduled from January 25 to March 11, 2024. His decision to prioritize recovery and fitness reflects the dedication to ensure peak performance in international cricket, and fans eagerly await his return to the IPL arena in the future.
