The representatives of the International Monetary Fund, currently in the island for the review of the extended financial facility provided to Sri Lanka, held discussions with the representatives of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya, including opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, at the Parliament complex in the afternoon.

Participating in the discussion was also a group representing micro, small, and medium businessmen.

During the meeting, the opposition representatives emphasized to the IMF representatives the urgent need for every step to lead towards saving the country from bankruptcy, strengthening investments, and bolstering the economy for the benefit of the people.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted the alarming situation in the country, where nearly half of the population has fallen into poverty. He noted the rapid decline in household incomes, leading to malnutrition among infants, pregnant women, mothers, 4.1 million school students, and the youth.

Premadasa stressed the critical support required from the International Monetary Fund to address these pressing issues, underscoring that the current situation demands immediate action.

Further, the opposition leader pointed out that had the government acted upon his party's proposal to seek the IMF's support earlier, the country might have been in a better position today.

While expressing agreement with the road map and goals presented by the IMF, Premadasa highlighted the need for certain amendments. He emphasized the importance of changing the method of income generation to ensure social justice and alleviate the burden on the people.

The discussion also touched upon the issue of businessmen receiving political protection and the necessity of establishing a system to recover income lost to the country through illicit businesses.

Premadasa assured the IMF representatives of his party's understanding of the urgent need for debt restructuring to prevent bankruptcy and improve international credit ratings. Additionally, he pledged to investigate and take legal action against any misuse of loans by parties responsible.

In addressing the severe economic challenges faced by the entire population, the opposition leader called for the implementation of a social security program tailored to benefit a wide range of low-income individuals without being influenced by external factors.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to work towards sustainable economic policies that prioritize the welfare and prosperity of the people of Sri Lanka.
