Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya and opposition leader, made an announcement today (24) in Parliament, declaring his intention to contest the upcoming presidential election.
During his participation in the parliamentary debate concerning the Easter Sunday terror attack, the opposition leader addressed speculations regarding his candidacy, stating that certain parties have been spreading propaganda suggesting that he would not run for the presidential election.
He also pledged to take appropriate action under a future SJB government to ensure justice for the victims of the tragic suicide bombings that occurred on April 21, 2019.
The opposition leader promised to establish a special commission comprising both local and foreign judges and investigators to thoroughly investigate the terror attacks. He reiterated his commitment to conducting a transparent investigation and implementing the recommendations of the proposed commission.
Additionally, Premadasa vowed to institute necessary legal proceedings, including the establishment of a special court and an independent public prosecutors’ office, to hold those responsible for the Easter attacks accountable. He criticized the incumbent government for purportedly concealing the truth about the bombings, accusing them of attempting to evade accountability.
