Shashi Welgama, the Chairman of the National Transport Commission (NTC), announced today that there will be no revision of bus fares despite the recent reduction in fuel prices.

The NTC had been anticipated to make a decision regarding the revision of bus fares on the same day. However, in light of the reduction in fuel prices, Welgama clarified that bus fares would remain unchanged.

Fuel prices saw a reduction effective from midnight on April 30, with diesel prices decreasing by Rs. 30 per litre. This decrease prompted discussions regarding potential adjustments to bus fares to reflect the cost savings resulting from the fuel price reduction.

Private bus associations, however, pointed out that bus fares had not been revised in response to the previous two instances of fuel price hikes. Therefore, they argued that any fare revision should only occur in July, aligning with past practices.

Emphasizing this stance, the private bus associations asserted that bus fares should not be revised downwards following the reduction in fuel prices.

The decision by the NTC highlights the complexities involved in balancing the interests of commuters and bus operators amid fluctuations in fuel prices. Despite the relief brought about by the reduction in fuel costs, the decision aims to maintain stability in bus fares for the time being.
