Advisory for High Waves issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued for the period from 05.00 a.m. 04 May 2024 to 05.00 a.m. 05 May 2024

Affected Areas:
For the sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Please Be Aware:
Swell waves with heights ranging from about 2.5 meters to 3.0 meters are expected during this period. (Note: This advisory pertains to sea areas, not land.)
The wave period is anticipated to be approximately 12 to 16 seconds.
There is a likelihood of increased swell waves in the sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
Near shore sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle may experience surges due to swell waves.
Sea conditions in the areas mentioned may be rough at times.

Action Required:
Naval and fishing communities engaged in maritime activities in the aforementioned sea areas are urged to exercise vigilance and caution during this period.
This advisory aims to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in maritime activities in the identified sea areas. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with high waves.

Showers or thundershowers
Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts in the evening or night.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
