Grama Niladhari officers across the country have initiated trade union action by reporting sick leave on May 6th and 7th, citing various demands.

The All-Island Grama Niladhari Officers’ Association announced that the trade union action encompasses the entirety of the nation, with officers withdrawing from their duties and reporting sick leave.

Neville Wijayaratne, the National Organizer of the Association, stated that over 14,000 village officials are participating in this professional action by reporting sick leave. He conveyed this information during a press conference held in Kandy on May 5th.

Jagath Chandralal, the General Secretary of the association, emphasized that all unions representing Grama Niladhari Officers have rallied behind this initiative. He underscored that unless the government addresses their concerns adequately during the Cabinet meeting, strict measures will be pursued.

The primary objectives of this strike include advocating for the establishment of a service constitution and addressing concerns related to office facilities, uniforms, stationery, and travel expenses.
