Texas, May 21, 2024 - In a stunning upset, the United States, ranked 19th in T20 internationals, defeated ninth-ranked Bangladesh by five wickets in Texas, taking a 1-0 lead in their three-match series. This victory marks the USA's second win against a Full Member nation in T20Is, following their triumph over Ireland in 2021.

USA 156 for 5 (Anderson 34*, Harmeet 33*, Mustafizur 2-41) beat Bangladesh 153 for 6 (Hridoy 58, Mahmudullah 31, Taylor 2-9) by five wickets

Bangladesh, opting to bat first, struggled early on as they found themselves at 68/4. Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto continued their run of poor form, unable to contribute significantly. Litton fell for 14 in the fifth over, despite surviving a dropped catch and a near run-out. He was eventually dismissed lbw by Jasdeep Singh. Najmul Hossain Shanto, struggling to find his rhythm, was stumped after making just three off 11 balls. However, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah managed to stabilize the innings. Hridoy top-scored with 58, and together with Mahmudullah, added a crucial 67-run partnership for the fifth wicket, guiding Bangladesh to a respectable total of 156/4.

In response, the USA's chase got off to a shaky start with early wickets falling. However, Andries Gous and Steven Taylor managed to steady the innings. Gous made a promising start but was eventually caught after hitting several boundaries. Taylor contributed 28 runs but was dismissed in an attempt to accelerate the scoring. The required run-rate began to climb, and the USA needed 50 runs off the last 20 balls.

Harmeet Singh, the former India Under-19 cricketer, then played a pivotal role in turning the match in the USA's favor. Coming in when the required run-rate was climbing, Harmeet struck three consecutive sixes, significantly easing the pressure. His unbeaten 33 off just 13 balls, coupled with Corey Anderson's steady 34 not out, sealed the victory for the USA. The pair added an unbroken 62 runs in 4.4 overs for the sixth wicket, with Anderson providing the finishing touch by hitting two crucial sixes in the final overs.

With this impressive victory, the USA has set the stage for an exciting series, demonstrating their growing prowess in international cricket. They now look forward to maintaining their momentum in the remaining matches against Bangladesh.
