Sources close to Prime Minister’s Office state that the appointment of the new central bank governor is being delayed until Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake returns to the island.

The same sources stated that both the President and the Premier are in agreement concerning the decision to appointment a new governor for the central bank.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake flew to China to participate in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s annual conference.

He is scheduled to return to the island this weekend. 

Meanwhile MP Nalin Bandara expressed his views about the appointment of new central bank governor during a media conference convened by the UNP this morning.

President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe met for discussions this morning at the Presidential Secretariat.

It is reported that the discussion had been centred on the VAT amendment issue. 

The president is scheduled to meet merchants’ associations on Monday morning .

On Monday evening, the President and the Premier are scheduled to discuss the matter again during the ruling party meeting.
