President Maithreepala Sirisena was unanimously elected as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Freedom Party by the Party Central Working Committee today.
Later the President’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by the Party Executive Committee as well.
SLFP Central Working Committee comprised of 69 members while its Executive Committee is comprised of 241 members.
Before the Central Working Committee and Executive Committee met in Colombo today, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in a notice said that he would hand over the party chairmanship to current President Maithreepala Sirisena.
He said in his notice that he took such a decision for the protection of the party members and to ensure democracy within the party.
