Minister Nalinda Jayatissa revealed in Parliament today a list of 43 Members of Parliament and former MPs who allegedly received compensation from the government for properties torched and damaged during the ‘Aragalaya’ protests in 2022. The total compensation amount received by these parliamentarians and former ministers is over Rs. 1.224 billion.
Minister Jayatissa pointed out that some Divisional Secretaries and District Secretaries were reportedly pressured to overestimate compensation amounts. He added that the maximum compensation for natural disasters or total loss is usually Rs. 2.5 million, but noted that the figures in this case were considerably higher.
