Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially announced the launch of Starlink satellite internet services in Sri Lanka.
In a post on X, Musk stated, "Starlink now available in Sri Lanka!", marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital connectivity.
Starlink received regulatory approval in August 2024, following legislative amendments to Sri Lanka’s telecommunications laws to accommodate satellite-based internet services.
Just last week, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne revealed that a pilot project using 10 Starlink devices was already in progress, testing the service’s feasibility and performance.
According to the official Starlink website, the residential package in Sri Lanka is priced at Rs. 15,000 per month, with a hardware cost of Rs. 118,000.
The package promises unlimited satellite internet, although it remains unclear whether the quoted prices include taxes.
Operated by SpaceX, Starlink provides high-speed, low-latency internet via thousands of low Earth orbit satellites, making it particularly effective for rural and underserved regions.
