The Homagama Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 after authorities reported the presence of dengue mosquito breeding sites within the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) depot premises in Homagama, the Homagama Medical Officer of Health’s office said.
Mosquito breeding grounds were previously discovered around two months ago in discarded tyres, iron and other equipment left after bus repair work at the depot. Despite several warnings and even red notices issued due to a lack of corrective action, authorities said the situation was not properly addressed.
As a result, with recent heavy rains, stagnant rainwater accumulated in these areas, leading to extensive mosquito breeding and creating a serious dengue risk situation.
Following continued negligence by the depot management, a recent emergency inspection conducted by Public Health Inspectors from the Pitipana area once again found multiple mosquito breeding sites within the premises, officials said.
