The import duty on big onion has been increased from 15 rupees to 30 rupees with effect from today.
The harvest season of local big onions is to start next month, and big onion farmers faced fierce competition due to the existing stocks of imported big onion in the last few months.
The Ministry of Finance stated that the aim of the duty increase is to discourage the import in order to fetch a better price for the local big onion farmers.
