Number of MPs to be elected from each district for General election announced

In the upcoming general election, adjustments have been made to the allocation of seats for several districts based on the 2024 electoral roll.

Gampaha and Kalutara districts have each gained one additional MP seat, while Colombo and Jaffna districts have lost one seat each.

Gampaha district, which had 18 seats according to the 2023 electoral roll, now has 19.
Kalutara district has increased its number of seats to 11.
Colombo district has seen its seats reduced from 19 to 18.
Jaffna district has also lost a seat, now holding 6 seats.

There have been no changes in the number of MP seats for other districts, including:
Kandy: 12 seats
Matale: 5 seats
Nuwara Eliya: 8 seats
Galle: 9 seats
Matara: 7 seats
Hambantota: 7 seats
Vanni: 6 seats
Batticaloa: 5 seats
Digamadulla: 7 seats
Trincomalee: 4 seats
Kurunegala: 15 seats
Puttalam: 8 seats
Anuradhapura: 9 seats
Polonnaruwa: 5 seats
Badulla: 9 seats
Monaragala: 6 seats
Ratnapura: 11 seats
Kegalle: 9 seats

The Election Commission has also announced new guidelines for the security deposits for independent candidates and the number of candidates required to be listed on nomination papers for political parties or independent groups contesting in the respective districts.
