The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an amber-level heat index advisory at 4:00 p.m. today (17), valid for February 18. The advisory applies to the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Southern provinces, as well as the Ratnapura district.
The heat index, which reflects the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to rise to the ‘Caution’ level in some areas.
Precautionary measures:
Job sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade frequently.
Indoors: Check on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated.
Clothing: Wear lightweight, white, or light-colored outfits.
Authorities urge the public to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related health issues.
