Meteorology Department forecasts showers and strong winds in several areas today

The Department of Meteorology states that several spells of rain may occur today (01) in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Hambantota districts after 2:00 pm.

Mainly dry weather will prevail across the rest of the island.

Fairly strong winds of around 30 to 40 kilometres per hour can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Matale districts.

Meanwhile, due to the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it will be directly overhead relative to the latitudes of Sri Lanka from August 28 to September 7.

Accordingly, the sun will be directly overhead today at 12:10 pm over the Kalpitiya, Talawa, Sinharagama, Galkadawala, Nachchaduwa, Padikaramaduwa, Gomarankalla, and Verugal areas.
