Somaweera Files Supreme Court Petition

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court today, challenging the appointment of defeated candidates to Parliament through the UPFA national list.

The petition was filed by MEP Deputy Chairman and UPFA Executive Committee member Somaweera Chandrasiri.

Chandrasiri’s name was also included to the UPFA national list.

Chandrasiri also performed rituals before deities, including smashing coconuts at Navagamuwa Pattini Devale against granting national list MP slots to defeated candidates recently.

Meanwhile the Colombo District Court issued an enjoining order on the UNP General Secretary, preventing him to appoint new members to the Uva Provincial Council.

A UNP candidate Pradeep Wijayawardana who is enlisted 9th in the preferential vote list cited in his petition, stated that the party is planning to bypass him and appoint two other members to the vacant seats of the Uva Provincial Council.

Two seats of the Uva PC fell vacant after its Chief Minster Harin Fernando and another member Ravindra Samaraweera were elected to Parliament in the 2015 general election.

Meanwhile another case filed by former minister Lakshman Seneviratna against UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was withdrawn from the Colombo district court.
