Agricultural authorities are to start distributing within days a virus imported from the US to fight the Sena caterpillar.
Speaking to Hiru News, director general of agriculture Dr. W.M.W. Weerakoon said the MTV virus had given positive results during experiments carried out 18 months ago.
Meanwhile, state minister Duminda Dissanayake today (14) inspected maize cultivations destroyed by the caterpillar at several villages at Gammiriswewa in Anuradhapura.
Maize farmers in several areas of Ampara and Polonnaruwa charge the authorities are yet to provide a solution to this pest.
