Officers of the Western Provincial Intelligence Unit have commenced an investigation to arrest 235 women who were engaged in prostitution by taking appointments through the internet.
It has been reported to the police that the women are seeking customers through a website and taking them to lodges. Among the 235 women, 20 young women involved in prostitution were arrested so far.
The police said that they have found information about 15 lodges where these women are taking customers and have commenced investigations to raid those places.
Police investigations have revealed that school-age boys are also involved in having links with these prostitutes.
A few days ago, a schoolboy in Bambalapitiya was in contact with a prostitute through this website.
It was revealed that most of the women engaged in prostitution have contracted various social diseases as well as the coronavirus.
The Western Provincial Intelligence Unit and the relevant officials further stated that the police are taking steps to obtain the assistance of the courts to stop this racket which is being carried out through a website.
