Matara, January 23, 2024: In a shocking incident in the Telijjawila area, 21-year-old Mindika Aluthgamage lost his life in a targeted shooting at a local shop. Reports indicate that the shooters, mistaking Mindika for the shop owner, had killed him.
The shop owner, previously accused of looting 2.1 million rupees from a nearby liquor shop, had been arrested and released on bail. He subsequently filed a fundamental rights petition with the Supreme Court, alleging police assault and coercion to admit guilt. Following the petition, the shop owner reported receiving threatening phone calls.
The motorcycle used by the shooters was discovered abandoned in a forested area near the Matara Bandattara Dam. However, the suspects remain at large, and authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend them.
Mindika Aluthgamage's body has been brought to his brother's house, and the last rites are scheduled for tomorrow at 4 pm at the Akurassa Amalagoda Public Cemetery.
