Following the tragic accident at the Fox Hill Supercross race in Diyatalawa, the police have commenced an investigation into the organizers of the event. According to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Talduwa, statements from the organizers are being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
In light of the incident, Shane Gunawardena, the champion of the inaugural Foxhill tournament in 1993, shared insights with Hiru News, attributing the accident to the dust on the track that wasn't adequately dampened. However, Ashar Amin, President of Sri Lanka Automobile Sport, the organizing body of the tournament, cited spectator negligence as the cause of the accident.
The devastating crash resulted in the loss of seven lives, with 18 individuals still undergoing treatment in hospitals. Among the deceased are residents from Welimada, Matara, Seeduwa, and Akurassa, along with a soldier serving in the army.
Major General Rasika Kumara, Military Media Spokesman, informed that two of the hospitalized individuals are in critical condition, with medical treatment being provided at Diyatalawa and Badulla General Hospitals.
Meanwhile, the two riders involved in the accident, aged 36 and 47 and hailing from Matara and Peradeniya, have been remanded until the 30th following their arrest at Diyathalawa Hospital.
An internal investigation within the army has also been launched to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials had previously cautioned spectators against approaching the security fence during the race.
