The National Transport Commission states that bus fares will be reduced by 4.24% effective from midnight today (October 1). Accordingly, the minimum fare will decrease to 27 rupees.
This reduction comes in response to the recent drop in fuel prices. The commission noted that bus fares were previously reduced by 5.07% during the last fare revision on July 2, setting the minimum bus fare at 28 rupees. However, fares were not adjusted following the fuel price revision in August.
In contrast, trade unions have reported that despite the reduction in fuel prices, three-wheeler fares will not be decreased. A senior official from the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority indicated that a fare review committee for three-wheelers is scheduled to meet tomorrow to make a final decision on this matter.
Meanwhile, Mal Sri De Silva, Chairman of the All Ceylon School Children's Transport Association, stated that despite lower diesel prices, there is no possibility of reducing school van fees due to ongoing vehicle maintenance costs.
