Supreme Court continues hearing petitions against Anti-Corruption Amendment Bill

The hearing of petitions filed against the proposed Anti-Corruption Amendment Bill commenced for the second day before the Supreme Court today.

The petition hearing is taking place before a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Shiran Gooneratne, Justice Mahinda Samayawardhena, and Justice Sampath Wijeratne.

Petitions have been filed by 15 parties, including former Minister Professor Gamini Lakshman Peiris, journalist Malinda Seneviratne, and the Media Law Forum.

The petitioners state that the provisions contained in the proposed bill violate fundamental human rights.

Accordingly, the petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to issue a ruling that if the relevant bill is to be passed, it must be approved by a referendum.
