Blasts heard near Iran's Kharg Island in Gulf

Explosions were heard on Saturday near Iran's Kharg Island in ​the Gulf, a key oil terminal, ‌Iranian media said, amid unconfirmed reports that an Iranian tanker was targeted nearby by U.S. forces.

The ​semi-official Fars news agency said explosion ​sounds were heard from the Gulf, ⁠but no sign of smoke was seen ​and the origin of the blasts was ​unknown.

The state-affiliated Nournews said there were unconfirmed reports from local sources that an Iranian tanker had ​been hit near Kharg by a ​missile fired by U.S. forces.

The news site Asr Iran ‌said ⁠the tanker was struck by four projectiles launched by U.S. forces and it was being unloaded.

There was no immediate official ​announcement by Iranian ​or ⁠U.S. authorities about the reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on August ​31 in a one-line social ​media ⁠post accompanied by an AI-generated video that Kharg Island was being "blown to smithereens". Iranian ⁠authorities ​have vowed a strong ​response if Kharg is attacked.
