Government rolls out 4,570 smart boards for classroom digitisation

Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, announced in Parliament today (22) that steps have been taken to import and distribute 4,570 smart boards for schools across the island.

Answering a question raised by Member of Parliament Rohini Kumari Wijeratna, the Prime Minister stated that 1,000 smart boards acquired under the 2024 Telecommunications Regulatory Commission allocations have already been distributed to 1,000 schools.

Additionally, out of 900 smart boards imported under a Chinese aid project for the 2026 period, 500 have already been delivered to schools, with installation work currently underway. Furthermore, arrangements have been made to distribute 2,670 smart boards provincially procured under the guidance of the Digital Task Force and allocations from the Ministry of Digital Economy. Their installation is also actively progressing.

Under the Digital Economy Ministry allocations, the North Western Province received the highest number of smart boards at 524. Allocations for other regions include 481 for the Western Province, 371 for the Eastern Province, 363 for the Uva Province, 311 for the Southern Province, 200 for the North Central Province, 170 for the Central Province, 150 for the Sabaragamuwa Province, and 100 for the Northern Province.

Dr. Harini Amarasuriya further noted that the primary objective of these initiatives is to digitize school classrooms and bring modern technology closer to students.
