The Constitutional Board tasked with formulating a new Constitution convened this morning at the Parliamentary Complex.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe forwarded the reports of the 6 subcommittees appointed for the purpose of drafting a new Constitution to the Constitutional Assembly.

The 6 sub committees on Fundamental Rights, Judiciary, Finance, Law and Order, Public Service and Centre Periphery Relations were therefore presented.

Special attention was paid towards abolishing the executive Presidency and changes to the electoral system.

Joining in, Leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan explained the process of presenting the draft constitution.  

He furthermore stated that the new constitution will be subjected to the approval of the parliament as well as a referendum.

The Constitutional Assembly will convene again on the 10th of December at 9 AM.

Meanwhile, the 3rd reading of the budget referred as the Committee Stage commenced today.

The Head of Expenditure of the President, Prime Minister, Independent Commissions and few other Ministries were taken up for debate.

President Maithripala Sirisena also arrived in Parliament to participate in the debate on the President’s expenditure sheet.
