At the party leaders’ meeting held yesterday, a consensus was reached to hold the provincial council election on 5th of January next year.

Yesterday’s meeting was convened with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the chair.

When contacted, Minister Mano Ganeshan said that leaders except for the SLFP, that participated in the meeting agreed to hold the election according to the old method.

At the party leaders’ meeting chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, on 20th last month, the Election Commission and Delimitation Commission Chairmen had stated that the election could be held on 5th of January next year if party leaders agreed to it.

The Joint Opposition did not participate in the meeting which was held at Temple Trees last night.

Joint Opposition parliamentary group leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena said that the Joint Opposition had already expressed its stance in writing.
