The Government Information Department stated that Najeeb Abdul Majeed of the UPFA was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province today.
He was elected to the provincial council from the Trincomalee District and was placed third in the election, by obtaining 11 thousand 726 preferential votes.
The governing UPFA party secured the most number of votes in the final result of the Eastern Province with 200 thousand 044 votes securing 14 out of the 37 seats, in the Provincial Council elections which concluded recently.

Meanwhile Sivenesanthurai Chadrakanthan was appointed as an advisor to the President.
The SLMC states that all provincial councillors who were elected to the Eastern Province have decided to support the government with regards to the development of the Eastern Province.
SLMC leader Minister Rauf Hakeem stated that the letter regarding this has been handed over to the Eastern province governor and to the newly appointed chief minister by the party general secretary today.
Minister Rauf Hakeem expressed his views while taking part in the swearing in of the chief minister of the Eastern Province.
