Police fired tear gas and water canons and baton charged when students of Higher National Diploma of Accountancy attempted to forcefully enter the University Grants Commission this afternoon.

Traffic was blocked on Ward Place as the students paraded on Ward Place to reach the University Grants Commission and staging a protest in front of the commission on several demands.

Six protesting students and a policeman were hospitalized after the confrontation, and hospital spokesperson said that the condition of the students and the policeman is not critical.

Meanwhile police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that 39 students have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Earlier the protesters assembled at the Fort Railway Station and paraded to University Grants Commission via Maradana.

Members of the Inter University Students Federations and the Inter University Bhikku Federation had joined the HNDA protesters.

Most of them wore black and black head bands during the protest.
